Cinco de Mayo celebrates the heroic defense of the City
of Puebla from the French army of Emperor Napoleon III. On the morning of
May 5th, 1862, French General Lorenz led his troops towards the city of
Puebla, México, 100 miles east of México city. He believed that he would be
welcomed with open arms. Waiting for him was Texas-born General Ignacio
Zaragoza under orders from president Benito Juarez to defend the city with a
small force of 2000 troops along with Puebla citizens who brought their own
farm tools as weapons. After a two hour battle, the French withdrew and the
battle of Puebla "La Batalla de Puebla", became a spark that ignited Mexican
pride until today. The spark continues to ignite our Hispanic pride for we
live in the greatest country in the world, the United States of America. |
